Our professional Osteopaths at our wellness centre in Eastbourne offer Osteopathy treatments. Here we have information about what happens on your first visit to an Osteopath, why people visit an Osteopath and how the treatment works.
The therapy includes a variety of gentle stretching, massage and joint manipulation techniques are used to treat and ease back, neck and joint pain, postural problems, headaches, frozen shoulder and sports injuries. Cranial Osteopathy is also offered.
Osteopathy is a gentle and effective hands-on approach to healthcare. It is based on the principle that the way your body moves influences how it functions. Osteopaths are highly competent healthcare professionals, recognised by the NHS as fully qualified to diagnose and treat independently.
Why see an Osteopath?
Over 30,000 people every day visit an osteopath suffering from a variety of conditions including neck or back pain, joint or muscular pain, sports injuries, recurring headaches and more. Many patients are pregnant mothers, unsettled children, or suffering from work strain, or pain and stiffness related to advancing years.
As you don’t need a referral from your doctor to see an osteopath, you will typically be seen quickly, without the long waiting times that often occur with other treatment options.
Whatever your age and no matter what challenges you may have to your health, it is likely that there is something an osteopath can do to help.
Regulated and Safe
Osteopathy is registered and regulated under UK law. This regulation works in much the same way as regulation for medical doctors.
Osteopathy is regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) who maintain a Statutory Register of those entitled to practise. Only practitioners meeting the high standards of safety and competency are eligible to join this register.
Osteopathy is recommended by the National Institute for Health Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) for the treatment of low back pain.
People visit osteopaths for problems relating to:
- Low back pain
- Joint pain
- Neck pain
- Frozen shoulder
- Muscular aches and pains
…..and many more.
What happens on your first visit?
Your past medical history is often relevant to current problems you are experiencing. At the start of your first visit a full medical history will be taken and you may be asked about past illnesses, operations, accidents and medications.
I will use gentle palpation skills to examine the health of your muscles, joints and other tissues. Analysis of your range and quality of joint movements, tenderness to palpation, muscle tone and strength, reflexes and blood pressure may also form a part of initial assessment.
Treatment involves a gentle hands-on approach using a wide range of joint mobilisation, muscle and other soft-tissue stretching and manipulation. My aim is to ease pain, reduce swelling and improve mobility. Making you more comfortable and improving your quality of life
